Hello and welcome to the inaugural edition of the DASH7 Connect, the quarterly newsletter for the DASH7 Alliance!
March 2009 marked the official launch of the DASH7 Alliance and we are pleased to share that as of today we have over 30 participants ranging from device integrators to systems integrators to end users to academia.
The objective of the DASH7 Connect newsletter is to present and discuss issues that impact the technology community, not just members of the DASH7 Alliance. This issue includes an introduction to DASH7 while subsequent editions will feature an array of content from member companies as well as more in-depth coverage of DASH7 innovations, events, and news.
DASH7 is one of the most important wireless data technologies of our generation with possibilities that are bounded only by ourimaginations. We invite you to join in the robust conversation that is taking place regarding the future of wireless sensor networking.
We hope you enjoy the first edition of DASH7 Connect.
Sincerely,
Paul Ritchie
Executive Director
P.S. We are aggressively pursuing new members to support our vision of being the world’s leading wireless sensor networking standard. All DASH7 members play an active role in shaping the standard for future applications. The Alliance is offering a 50% reduction of membership fees to all new principal members that sign up prior to December 1, 2009. Further information can be found on the DASH7 website or by contacting me at paul@dash7.org.

The underlying technology of the ISO 18000-7 standard is actually not new but rather technology that has been successfully deployed for many years by the U.S. Department of Defense operator of the world’s largest and most complex supply chain. Products with DASH7 capability built-in or attached to them will dramatically simplify the way we keep in touch with the "non-human" world around us, improving the wireless communications capabilities of a wide range of mobile devices.

The DASH7 Alliance is launching a new working group. The focus of this group will be on assembling requirements, defining a comprehensive set of rich capabilities and developing interoperability test methods for cargo container tracking and monitoring. Under the Container Security and Sensing Initiative (CSSI), DASH7 experts will come together and address the long awaited market need for container intrusion detection device interoperability.

The DASH7 Annual Meeting will be held February2nd and 3rd in SanJuan, Puerto Rico. Don’t pencil in those dates, pen in the dates now! Our first annual meeting was a huge success and this one will not disappoint. Hotels, Agenda, and Activity details tofollow in the next DASH7 Connect newsletter.
The first order for Dash7 products was received in September 2009, further to the Department of Defense’s $429.4 million RFID III procurement contract. Products from three vendors - Evigia, IDENTEC Solutions and Savi Technology, which are all members of the DASH7 Alliance, were part of the initial order.
“These contracts mark an important milestone for the DASH7 Alliance,” said Patrick Burns, President of the DASH7 Alliance. “Now NATO customers, and defense suppliers in industries from aerospace and automotive to logistics can rely on a single open standard for monitoring and securing critical cargo, parts and assets, around the world.”.

The DASH7 Alliance was formed to advance the use of DASH7 wireless data technology based on the ISO 18000-7 standard for active RFID. By developing extensions to the existing ISO 18000-7 standard, and ensuring interoperability among devices, DASH7 will address some of the risks that have been previously associated with the adoption of proprietary technologies. Formed in 2009, the Alliance now has more than 30 members including manufacturers, systems integrators, developers, regulators, academia, and end-users.
The goals of the DASH7 Alliance are to:
- Develop improvements and extensions to the ISO 18000-7 standard
- Work to ensure that products claiming DASH7 capabilities comply with DASH7 specifications
- Encourage the development of products using DASH7 technology
- Educate consumers and enterprises globally about DASH7 technology
The DASH7 Alliance provides a framework for extensive application development, seamless interoperability, and security for DASH7-enabled transactions. |
